Ever since Hilary Duff announced earlier this month that she'd be releasing new music for the first time in a decade, all eyes have been on the former Disney darling turned multi-hyphenate mom. And Duff clearly knows everyone's watching. Not that she even needed a glow-up—the woman is chronically gorgeous—but her front-row-seat sighting at the Fendi show at Milan Fashion Week has everyone talking about how next-level stunning she looks. It's nearly impossible to narrow down the look to one favorite feature, but perhaps the most fun and copyable element is her amazing manicure.

Duff attended the Fendi Spring/Summer 2026 show on Tuesday, September 24, along with a number of other fashion-loving celebrities like Naomi Watts and Shailene Woodley, both of whom wore muted colors and barely-there nail polishes. Duff, on the other hand, seems to have said, “French manicure, please, and don't do any of the usual stuff,” to her as-yet-unidentified nail artist.

Hilary Duff sitting crosslegged in a red top and green skirtPhoto: Getty Images

Each one of the Duff's ballerina-shaped nails has a different unexpected color combo with an especially thick tip: shimmering gold with a terracotta tip, silver with a white tip, rosy rust with a darker burgundy tip, the palest of silvery lavenders with a pastel green tip, and so on. The manicure is complemented by a big, blue Fendi statement ring.

Hilary Duff's Color Block French Manicure Breaks Every Rule — See PhotosPhoto: Getty Images

Although her outfit didn't perfectly match the colors in her manicure, it echoed the playful “color theory be damned” spirit. She paired a satiny, pale green pencil skirt with a bright red, oversized top, and a bubblegum pink straw bag.

The rest of her glam was on the more subtle side, but it still wowed big-time. Hairstylist Rio Sreedharan gave Duff voluminous, loose waves that framed her glowing, brown-toned makeup by Nikki Wolff.

As much as I wish I could wake up with those waves tomorrow, more realistically, I cannot wait to start pairing random colors together and throw the rules out the window when it comes to how thick or thin a French tip needs to be, and I thank Hilary Duff for what will be endless inspiration this fall.

I've been perfecting my false-lash technique since high school, when I discovered that the right lash glue could make strip lashes survive eight-hour school days. Eventually, I graduated to professional lash extensions, but after months of upkeep, damaged lashes, and the mounting costs, I couldn’t justify the expense anymore. Going back to strips gave me convenience, but not the customization I wanted. That all changed when I discovered lash clusters, which allowed me to experiment with length and volume in my makeup looks in a way I never could with strips.

But clusters alone aren't magic. The real game-changer is the eyelash glue. Without the right adhesive, even the most fluttery DIY cluster falls flat (or off completely). Over time, I’ve narrowed my favorites down to four lash glues that cover every scenario: formulas strong enough to hold overnight or through a weeklong vacation. Of course, technique matters too. Both your glue application and lash removal can make or break both their longevity and your natural lash health, so I tapped a makeup artist to share pro tips on maximizing hold without causing damage.

Why we love it: False lashes don't stand a chance without the right glue holding them in place, which is why the uCoolMe Bond & Seal Lash Glue is my number-one pick. Designed with a 2-in-1 bond and seal system, this lash glue provides a staggering 150 hours of wear. Despite the strong hold, the formula is hypoallergenic and non-irritating, making it ideal for sensitive skin and eyes while still delivering the kind of staying power you’d expect from pro eyelash extensions. Plus, the eyelash adhesive is fast-drying, waterproof, and sleep-safe. The dual brush design makes application a breeze: the black bond acts like mascara for even coverage, while the white seal locks everything in place and protects against dust, clumping, and flaking.

“I reach for the uCoolMe Lash Bond and Seal whenever I need serious longevity. It’s hands down my favorite glue for long wear. It’s the one I trust on vacations or when I’m crunched for time because once it’s on, it doesn’t budge for over five days. The hold is intense, which means I usually can’t reuse my lashes after, but honestly, I don’t mind since it feels more sanitary that way. I will say this glue requires some experience with application as it’s not as forgiving once the cluster makes contact with the lash cluster, and you should only be putting the glue at the base as opposed to raking it through the lash. Doing this can cause the lashes to clump and not last as long.” —Jailynn Taylor, contributor

Why we love it: This is the OG lash glue—the one you grabbed before a girls’ night out, tossed in your bag, and knew would keep your strip lashes intact until morning. DUO Striplash Adhesive formula is designed for all-day wear, applies white and dries clear, and keeps both strip and individual lashes firmly in place. Once it dries, the glue peels off your falsies without a mess, making them easy to reuse. If your first placement isn’t perfect, it gives you just enough flexibility to adjust without needing more glue. Unlike some lash adhesives, DUO is applied directly to the lash band with the applicator. A thin line from the squeeze tube is all it takes, and after a quick, 30-second drying time, lashes press into place and stay secure for hours.

It’s beginner-friendly since you apply it directly to the lash strip as opposed to your lashes, and if you don’t nail the placement on the first try, it’s forgiving enough to let you adjust without starting over or damaging your natural lashes.” —Jailynn Taylor, contributor

The glue, specifically the Whisper Light Bond, ensures they stay put without compromising comfort. Its dual-sided design makes the application intuitive. The black or clear micro-mascara brush evenly sweeps the clear formula through each lash for grip and definition, while the precision clear seal tip targets the base to seal it all in for a seamless finish and natural look.

“Kiss Falscara was my introduction to lash clusters and bond-and-seal systems, which prolong the length of wear of cluster lashes as opposed to the 24-hour wear of regular lash glues. The application is super beginner-friendly. You just swipe on the bond, place your clusters, and seal them in. I love that it gives me a hold that lasts for days but still comes off easily when I’m ready to remove it. Because the glue isn’t harsh, I can actually reuse the lashes, which makes the system even more practical.” —Jailynn Taylor, contributor

    Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best way to apply and remove lashes to maximize hold and minimize damage?

Makeup artist Dominique Gordon emphasizes starting with fit. “When applying a strip lash, you always want to measure and trim the lashes to suit your eyes,” she says. This step prevents lifting at the corners and makes wear more comfortable. She also notes that the glue and application matter. “Allow 5–10 seconds for the glue to set and apply in the center of the eye directly along the lash line. Tuck in the outer and inner corners using tweezers or index/thumb fingers.” Using a brush-on formula gives more control and reduces mess.

When it’s time to take them off, Gordon advises working from the outer corner inward and placing the strip back in its case. “You can also refresh/clean them by using a few Q-tips and micellar water,” she adds, a step that helps maintain their shape for multiple wears.

Is there a certain glue that's better for strips versus clusters?

“A standard lash glue is suitable for strip lashes, as they are typically for short-term wear,” says Gordon. Clusters, on the other hand, need “a bond and seal dual-ended glue [to] ensure their longevity for 10–14 days.”

Should you be cleaning your lashes if wearing them for extended periods?

Yes, hygiene directly impacts both eye health and wear time. “Lash extensions should be washed daily with an oil-free wash and a Q-tip,” Gordon says, who warns that neglecting this step allows buildup to accumulate. “Your lashes harbor dirt, oil, and bacteria that can cause infection or minimize the longevity of the application,” she explains. And don’t forget to use a gentle eye-makeup remover to cleanse your eyes.

How we test and review products

We always enlist a range of testers for any review, but mascaras are another story. While some can be used across different lash lengths, thicknesses, shape, colors, and concerns, many are created with specific consumers and their needs in mind. When reviewing tools, we also take into account testers’ experience. For instance, a new, innovative mascara may feature an industry-leading formula, but if the wand still needs some tweaking to prevent clumps and webbing, we have to consider this when determining whether it is worthy of a recommendation.

For our review of the best lash glues, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and experts you interviewed for the piece—who all have different lash concerns, desired outcome (i.e., want length over volume), and whether one product was tested across varying lash types. Testers considered performance across three primary categories: efficacy, ease of use, and value. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we can fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Not quite a balm and not quite a gloss, the best lip oils are the ideal in-between, offering hydration, shine, and often, your-lips-but-better tint. Because they’re formulated with an oil base, they deliver the juicy, decadent finish of a lip gloss or sheer lip tint with the moisturizing benefits of a lip balm—ideal for people with dry lips. But unlike glosses, lip oils swap surface-level stickiness for formulas that sink into your lips. In fact, most are loaded with conditioning ingredients you’ll recognize from your skin-care routine, like peptides, antioxidants, and botanical oils, because, ICYMI, your lips deserve the same TLC as the rest of your face. Scroll on to give your gloss a break and welcome a nourishing lip oil into the spotlight.

Allure commerce editor Sarah Han applying Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oil in Soft Mauve.

    Sarah Han

Why it's worth it: Summer Fridays' Dream Lip Oil is a hit among our editors for its velvety, high-shine finish and moisturizing feel. Packed with softening vitamin E and nine botanically derived oils (hi, rose oil and apricot oil), it strikes the perfect balance between a milky wash of color and buildable pigment power, minus the slick or sticky feel. It has just enough slip for comfortable wear, and its sheer shine lasts all day, thanks to those oils that give the formula its long-lasting, glossy finish.

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

"I have about a million and one lip balms and oils lying around my apartment and various bags, but Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oil—'quiet luxury' in a tube, as I like to call it—is the one I reach for the most. I love wearing it on its own on no-makeup days or as a hydration-boosting prep step before applying lipstick or lip tint (my perpetually dry lips drink it up). And as an aficionado of colorful lips, I much prefer the hint of tint this formula leaves behind over a clear oil any day."—Sarah Han, commerce editor

Tester feedback from Allure associate beauty editor Annie Blay-Tettey

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

"Right off the bat, I loved how big the applicator is. I have fairly big lips, so I appreciate that I only had to do one swipe on each lip to get the job done. The tint is really pretty and sheer; it doesn't pack on too much color, but just enough that you get the effect."—Annie Blay-Tettey, associate beauty editor

    Sarah Hoffmann

Why it's worth it: E.L.F. Cosmetics’s Glow Reviver Lip Oil is a little minty, a lot pigmented, and always ready to offer a mid-morning, mid-afternoon, mid-evening—or mid-mid-evening—perk-up. After months of Best of Beauty testing, our editors crowned it one of the most pigmented options around, delivering bold color without sacrificing hydration (or excessive coins). Infused with luscious apricot, avocado, jojoba, and pomegranate oils, this oil locks in moisture for the long run, and the shade options are chef’s kiss. Our top picks? Succulent Red Delicious, a juicy, sheer watermelon, and Jam Session, a scrumptious black cherry hue.

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

"Two things about me: I love a fat doe-foot applicator and sheer berry anything. E.L.F. Cosmetics' Glow Reviver Lip Oil in Jam Session hands me both in one sub-$10 package. My lips are very, very pale naturally, so I do like applying it over a bit of a lip tint or liner to help the color along, but this lip oil is truly the black cherry on top of a solid chunk of my lip combos. The thick and luxe texture gives $40 lip oil vibes, so it feels like a lucky break that it's only $9."—Sarah Hoffmann, commerce producer

    Lily Wohlner

Why it’s worth it: A gloss, an oil, and a plumper all in one, YSL’s Loveshine Plumping Lip Oil Gloss had our testers swooning during Best of Beauty Testing (earning it the 2025 award for best plumping gloss). The why behind the win? In addition to drenching lips with moisture (thanks to vitamin E and hyaluronic acid), Loveshine makes them appear fuller à la a subtly tingling mix of ginger and pepper oils. The result: lips so juicy and plush, don’t be surprised if someone asks if you’ve had “a little something done.”

“I’m not usually a lip plumper person, but this one makes my lips look juicy without that lingering sting. It’s definitely tingly—more refreshing than burning—which I actually look forward to when I apply it. The shades are gorgeous, and the formula feels creamy and silky going on. If we’re talking luxury, this one takes the cake—it’s earned a spot in every one of my purses.”—Lily Wohlner, commerce writer

Why it’s worth it: The hyaluronic acid and evening primrose oil infused in the Kosas Wet Lip Oil Gloss hydrate and adorn lips with a vinyl-like glow, without any stickiness. Even as the formula wears throughout the day, you can still feel its smoothing effects. We love it so much that it has two Best of Beauty Clean Awards (2023 and 2025). In terms of shade range, there's everything from a nudey Bare (which is what Allure former shopping market editor Angela Trakoshis is using above) to a cherry popsicle-like Jaw.

Why it’s worth it: Gen Z may have made Clinique’s iconic Black Honey hue go viral, but it’s long been an everyday essential. Once exclusive to the brand’s Almost Lipstick, Black Honey lives on in Clinique’s Pop Lip + Cheek Oil (a 2025 Best of Beauty winner). The formula is what keeps us hooked: a plush, glassy, and nourishing blend of safflower, jojoba, olive, sunflower seed, and castor oils that add a subtle yet slightly punchy wash of color. While the original Black Honey (a sheer mauve) won our hearts, the lineup also includes the equally flattering Pink Honey (a sheer pink) and Nude Honey (an apricot-not-too-warm, not-too-pink dream). Dab it on the lips for a sheer, juicy tint and the cheeks for a dewy flush while you’re at it.

Like skin care for your lips, it’s formulated with ingredients like jojoba oil and RMS’s Adaptogenic Herbal Blend—infused with mineral sea water, wildcrafted buriti oil, and cherry seed oil to condition. It lasts from morning coffee to lunch break to keep super dry lips feeling hydrated, unlike some oils we tried that seem to slip off the lips after just a few minutes. The oil is also scented and flavored with vanilla extract to add to its deliciousness. The jumbo doe-foot applicator distributes product evenly every time, resulting in softer, fuller-looking lips that strike that just-right balance between everything and nothing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How are lip oils different from lip balms?

"Lip balms often contain humectants, emollients, and occlusive ingredients, working to help boost moisture in the lips, while lip oils provide an occlusive layer to the lips to help seal moisture in," says Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. "Lip balms tend to be best suited for those who experience dry and dehydrated lips, but can also be layered and used in combination with lip oil."

In other words, we like to think of lip oils as the intersection between lip balms and glosses. As the skinification of makeup products becomes more popular, the demand for lip oils has risen for their subtle tints and moisture-replenishing properties. Besides the sheer tints that make them so lovable, lip oils also double as nourishing treatments without feeling greasy, heavy, or sticky.

Which ingredients are commonly found in lip oils?

Many lip oils are formulated with lightweight emollients like jojoba, grapeseed, squalane, avocado, or rosehip oil, notes Brendan Camp, MD, a double board-certified dermatologist in New York City. However, Dr. Camp adds: “Some [lip oils] contain nourishing ingredients like peptides, which may encourage collagen production, ceramides, which help fortify the skin barrier, vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that protects skin from oxidative stress, and hyaluronic acid, which is a humectant that helps skin retain moisture.” Whatever the case, lip oils are ideal for anyone experiencing dry, cracked, and dull-colored lips.

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide shade range inclusive of consumers with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is its packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best lip oils, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and board-certified dermatologists to review the products. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product’s performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

A good tan makes me feel like a brand-new woman (IYKYK). So, when Friday rolls around, the best self-tanning mousses hate to see me coming. I’ve been a self-tan lover for years—my mainstays being bronzing drops and body lotions—but I’d never tried a mousse until testing them for this story. Fast forward two months, and they’ve officially stolen my heart. Yes, they’re a bit more labor-intensive—you need a deep exfoliation beforehand and a mitt to apply them—but the payoff is worth it: less streaking, deeper color, longer-lasting glow, and friends asking if I got a spray tan (even though the reality is I was leg-up-on-the-wall in my bathroom shower).

After trying 12 Allure team favorites and bestsellers, I’ve officially become a self-tanning mousse pro. So, let me break down what makes one worthy of a spot on my list: It should last at least five days; offer an even, sunkissed glow, sans orange streaks; give my skin a hydrating boost; and smell like a tropical island (not a chemical experiment).

During testing, I patch-tested each mousse on one arm for comparison, then left it on to see how long it developed and how long my tan lasted. After months of trial and error, I’ve rounded up the absolute best mousses for an effortless glow.

Why it’s worth it: Dolce Glow’s Lusso Self-Tanning Mousse was the first one I tried on my testing journey, and it blew me away right out of the gate (I mean, it is a 2025 Best of Beauty Award winner, after all!). Even after testing 11 more formulas, I kept comparing everything back to this one, which is why it ultimately snagged my top spot.

The lightweight formula glides on effortlessly, blending like a dream with zero streaks. It also skips the dreaded tanner stench, replaced by a subtle, fresh scent, so you can easily wear it out of the house while it develops. As the color soaked in, my skin felt soft and nourished—not dry and begging for moisture—thanks to aloe vera, jojoba oil, and Australian macadamia oil. Just keep in mind that the shade continues to deepen for over four hours, so you might look extra bronzy before rinsing.

I tested this mousse twice, leaving it on for six to seven hours each time (per the brand’s rec for a deep tan), and the result was pure island-vacay glow. If you’re after something subtler, you can rinse after two to four hours—this customizability is why the brand offers just one shade.

The real wow moment came after washing it off—it looked exactly like a professional spray tan. No streaks, no patchiness, just an even, airbrushed finish. I even used it on my face (a risky move, I know), and it didn’t cling or turn too dark around my nose and mouth. Instead, my skin looked hydrated, glowy, and bronzed, with zero orange undertones. The color lasted a full seven days on my body (my face wore off faster, since I wash it more often), outperforming nearly every other formula I tested, and faded flawlessly. Although it takes a while to develop, I’ll take it for its week-long staying power.

Why it’s worth it: After testing this mousse, it’s no surprise it snagged a 2024 Best of Beauty award. At first, I was skeptical: It goes on dark (like, can’t-leave-the-house dark) and I’ll admit, a little streaky at first—especially on my face, where I looked like I’d applied a mud mask. However, it dries down fast and doesn’t move once it’s on, so you can fix any harsh spots before it sets. After the easy, two-hour wait and a rinse, it gave me one of the best-looking tans of the mousses I tried (phew!). And, the quick development makes it perfect for last-minute plans.

I tested Maximum Tan, the deepest of the four shades. Even as a naturally pale girl, it didn’t look fake—just perfectly olive-y and bronzed, with zero streaks. My skin felt hydrated, too, thanks to an aloe vera base. And, the formula includes caffeine, which is known to reduce puffiness in body-care products. The color keeps developing over the next 24 hours, so it’s definitely deeper the next day, but not unwearably so. Pro tip: Apply a very light layer to your face to avoid looking a little too dramatically dark.

I noticed the color starting to fade around day five—which makes sense, since I’d only left it on for two hours, so I didn’t expect it to last as long as some of the gradual tanners I tried. It came off a bit patchy on my hands, wrists, and ankles, but everywhere else faded evenly. I’ll take it for the two-hour wait time!

Why it’s worth it: +Lux Unfiltered’s N°36 Supernatural Tanning Mousse may require a full eight hours to achieve your darkest tan, but trust me—it’s worth the wait. It lasts a full week and is packed with skin-loving ingredients like moisturizing sunflower and jojoba seed extracts, brightening vitamin C, antioxidant-rich papaya extract and cocoa seed extract, and hydrating hyaluronic acid, making it one of the richest formulas on this list. Plus, it smells like fresh blood orange, so there’s no classic self-tanner stink while it develops. It also comes in two shades (medium and deep), so it’s a bit more customizable than formulas like Dolce Glow or St. Tropez, which are only available in one shade.

You could let this sit for four hours for a lighter glow, but I like to max it out (can you tell I hate looking pasty?). I usually sleep in it, then rinse it off in the morning for an even, bright, streak-free finish. Since it soaks in for so long, the tan lasts a full seven days. And, when it does fade, it’s smooth and natural, with zero patchiness.

Why it’s worth it: Customize your glow with St. Tropez’s Self Tan Express Mousse, which can be left on from one to three hours. One hour gives you a natural glow and three gives a deep, dark tan, so you get the exact color you want. I love that the max three-hour window is all you need for a rich, island-ready bronze. And speaking of islands, it smells like one, too (hi, coconut, vanilla, and Tahitian gardenia).

This formula glides on like silk without streaks, thanks to hydrating aloe in the formula. Plus, it dried down in seconds and didn’t transfer onto my clothes, which I appreciated. I left this formula on for the full three hours and got a rich, realistic tan that lasted five days before starting to fade. While I wish it had stuck around a bit longer, it faded evenly, so I didn’t have to worry about scrubbing any patchy spots off with a removal mitt.

    Tan Luxe

    Hydra Mousse

    $49

    Amazon

    $54

    Bluemercury

Why it’s worth it: Dry skin and self-tanning mousse don't jive, since the color won't stick as smoothly. So if that’s a concern, opt for the most hydrating formula possible—and that is the Tan Luxe Hydra Mousse. Formulated with a nourishing blend of vitamins B, C, and E, plus raspberry oil and the classic aloe vera, this foam not only glides onto your skin like a dream, but feels hydrating while it soaks in, making it an actual enjoyable experience rather than something that feels stripping or drying (trust, I’ve tested my fair share of these that did not make it onto the final list).

As you can see, this mousse is totally clear, so unlike every other formula on this list, you can’t see where you applied it, whether you buy the light/medium or medium/dark shade. One one hand, it’s nice because you can wear it out of the house without worrying like you look like a crazy person out in public, but on the other hand I found it took more time for me to apply, as I had to go over every area of my body to ensure each section was covered since I had no guidelines.

I opted for the medium/dark shade, this tan develops in four to six hours, which I find to be the average for most self tanners. Four hour is a lighter more natural tan, and six gives you a darker color. I did find that the final color wasn’t as dark as other tanners I tried (cue Dolce Glow or St. Tropez), making it a solid option for paler people or those who want something for the chillier months where you don’t want to look too dark. I tested this one during a long beach weekend, so I found that it faded quicker than others I tried due to chlorine and salt water, but I’m confident it would have lasted longer in my usual NYC environment.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prep my skin for tanning mousses?

Before applying any self-tanner, take care of treatments like waxing, shaving, manicures, or hair color touch-ups. "All of those treatments can remove self-tanner," spray tanner Anna Stankiewicz previously told Allure. Once that’s done, it’s time to prep. Self-tanner can sink into dry skin, leaving dark patches behind that look unnatural. Slough away any flakes with a scrub—focusing on rough spots like the knees, elbows, ankles, and heels—or a cleanser with glycolic or salicylic acids to remove dead, dull skin, Stankiewicz says. I also love an exfoliating mitt (a lot of self tanner brands like Dolce Glow and St. Tropez sell them), which removes any leftover tanner, leaving behind a fresh base for your next round.

What should you look for in the best tanning mousses?

When I’m shopping for a self-tanning mousse, I look for skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, or vitamin E to keep my skin hydrated while the tan develops—because who wants dry, stripped skin (even if it is bronzed)? Most self-tanners rely on DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a sugar that reacts with amino acids in the top layer of skin to create a gradual glow. The tricky part? DHA can be hard to stabilize, which is why some tans turn tangerine, cosmetic chemist Randy Schueller told Allure. The best formulas add stabilizing sugars like erythrulose; encapsulation technology to lock in a smooth, streak-free finish; and moisturizing emollients—all of which also neutralize that yeasty self-tanner smell we dread.

How do I get an even, streak-free tan?

Start with exfoliated, completely dry skin (emphasis on dry—oils “could interfere with the binding of DHA to the stratum corneum and cause uneven development,” says NYC-based dermatologist Shari Marchbein, MD). Spot-moisturize only the tricky areas—knees, elbows, and ankles—to prevent them from going too dark. If you’re a beginner, stick to lighter formulas to minimize streaks and patchiness, then level up to darker shades once you’re confident. When applying, work from the legs up, using any leftover product on your feet, and finish with your hands. Afterward, give yourself extra drying time. “If the directions say five minutes, wait 10,” Stankiewicz advises. For bonus insurance, dust a talc-free powder all over to prevent transfer, she adds. Then, it’s hands off: no showering or sweating for six to eight hours until it’s time to rinse.

Can I fix mistakes or remove self-tanner from my hands?

Yes! If you notice streaks or patches after the tan has developed, exfoliating mitts on wet skin work wonders for lifting unwanted color away, according to Evans. You can also use a baby wipe to dab away excess or misplaced product as you're self-tanning. To prevent staining your hands, wash them immediately after applying self-tanner, and treat them like you would the rest of your body with an exfoliating mitt if any color lingers.

For our review of the best tanning mousses, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and professional makeup artists to review the products. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product's performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

I could have sworn the first season of The Golden Bachelor was a fever dream I had two years ago. It shouldn't have been groundbreaking for a reality TV show to feature a couple dozen women over the age of 50 vying for love—no insulting gimmicks, no downplaying their worth—but it was. Although the love shared by the first season's winning couple was fleeting (Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist divorced just three months after their live televised nuptials), the impact its cast had on us as viewers remains. It rewired people's perceptions about women “of a certain age."

We watched the women form genuine connections with one another, battle complex feelings about love and marriage, goof off in the mansion, and get fiercely competitive during group challenges. Audiences fell so hard in love with Joan Vassos, she became the inaugural Golden Bachelorette last year, when the nation rooted for her to finally find her match—which she did, with now-fiancé Chock Chapple.

And now we all get to do it again. The Golden Bachelor returns to ABC on September 24, and it promises to be every bit as heartwarming as its predecessor. And much like the original cast, the competitors of season two are a bunch of absolute knockouts (respectfully!) in their 50s, 60s, and 70s. If you know anything about the Bachelor franchise, you know they were mostly in charge of doing their own glam work on set and prepping their hair and skin before arriving at the mansion—so I asked the cast to break down their MVP beauty products, the tools and treatments they can't live without, and the advice they'd give to their younger selves.

    Lily, 72

Her day-to-day beauty routine: I’m pretty simple with my skin care. I use Olay cleansing wipes at night and their Regenerist moisturizer. Occasionally, I’ll use a serum and undereye cream. I only wash my hair once a week and use an argan oil hair mask. I also use heat protectant before I blow-dry. I’m very simple on makeup; foundation and mascara are the most important.

The best beauty tip she learned on set: To use sunscreen all the time and wear a hat and sunglasses in the sun.

    Andra, 77

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Andra.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

Her non-negotiable skin care must-have: I have used prescription Retin-A cream 0.05 percent on my neck and face every evening for 36 years. I swear by it. I am 77 years old, and my facial wrinkles are limited and have been forming around my eyes just in the past four years.

Her biggest beauty regret: I wish I had learned to avoid the sun in my 20s and 30s. I do my best to avoid the sun now—I have been since my early 40s. I also just began using sunscreen (I know…bad girl!).

Her pared-down makeup routine: I did not use makeup at all before filming The Golden Bachelor. I only wore it once at my wedding over 50 years ago. A professional applied it. Now I use a little. I use mostly L'Oréal eyeliner, Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Mascara, and MAC lipstick. I am pretty basic.

    Nicolle, 64

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Nicole.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

Her non-negotiable beauty must-haves: For skin, my own “fountain of youth” face serum and body butter. I created them—they’re organic and better than any product I could buy, especially for mature skin. For hair, the Wet Brush Detangler. For makeup, the IT Cosmetics CC Cream foundation.

The best beauty tip she learned on set: When you wear fake lashes, use mascara, swiping up from your top waterline to glue your fake lash to your real lash—plus, it makes the lashes look fuller.

Her beauty splurging philosophy: I don’t splurge. I believe in a plant-based diet and lots of sleep. The two best inside-out beauty “products.”

    Carla, 62

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Carla.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

Her biggest beauty splurges: I love getting facials that are tailored to my skin needs, and eyelash extensions are a delightful splurge. I prefer natural extensions that add a subtle pop to my eyes. Massages are a little luxury that I consider essential. They help relax my muscles, reduce stress, and improve circulation, all of which contribute to a radiant complexion.

Her biggest beauty regret: I wish I had spent more time exploring and experimenting with makeup during my 30s and 40s. Over time, I've lost some confidence, and now feel like I'm playing catch-up, especially when it comes to current makeup applications. The last thing I want is to look outdated with old practices that inadvertently age me.

Her “straightforward” day-to-day beauty routine: I absolutely love the Molecular Silk Amino Hydrating Cleanser by Allies of Skin. It's so gentle and leaves my skin clean without that annoying residue. I’m all about sun protection, so Black Girl Sunscreen is my go-to because it doesn’t leave that dreaded white cast. When it comes to my hair, I keep it simple with my sisterlocks. I’m pretty low-maintenance and only use products when it's shampoo day. My favorites are NVLX Locs Loading Shampoo and Lush Locs Nourishing Hair Oil. As for makeup, I’m all about enhancing what I’ve got. I swear by Pat McGrath foundation, eye shadows, and blushes, and I can’t leave out my favorite for lips, Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb.

The beauty products she can’t live without: Wildling Moonbounce Bioretinol Moisturizer, Pureology Hydrate Shampoo, and Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer.

Her biggest beauty splurge: Hair extensions.

The beauty treatments she swears by: Botox and laser skin treatments.

The beauty lesson she wishes she’d learned in her 30s: Stay out of the sun. We used baby oil to tan…yikes!

    Peg, 62

The beauty products she can’t live without: SkinCeuticals eye cream, Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream, Almay mascara, and Colorescience Brush-On Shield.

Her biggest beauty splurges: Photofacials [aka Intensed Pulsed Light or IPL treatments], hair treatments, perfume.

The best beauty tip she learned on set: Debbie taught me to use retinol on my chest and neck, followed by shea butter.

    Terri, 72

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Terri.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

The beauty treatment she swears by: My biggest beauty splurge is probably a laser facial treatment called Cutera that I do to keep my face free from dark spots and blemishes. It stimulates collagen production to soften fine lines and wrinkles.

Her skin care routine: I love Neutrogena Makeup Wipes to remove all of my makeup nightly. I follow up with retinol and then a moisturizer to lock in hydration and reduce irritation; I love CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. In the morning, I apply a vitamin C serum. I also frequently apply organic castor oil to my face and hair. I also take bioidentical hormones, which help with my dry skin. At 72 years old, I need all the help I can get!

The beauty lesson she wishes she'd learned in her 30s: Instead of chasing every new product, I would have stuck with a few timeless ones: sunscreen, vitamin C, and patience.

    Debbie, 65

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Debbie.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

Her biggest body care secrets: No. 7 Retinol Serum mixed with Eucerin body moisturizer to reduce crepiness on the neck and décolletage. Westmore Beauty body makeup. I’m pretty sure all the women in the mansion were using this product. It’s a lifesaver! Peta Jane Self-Tanning Mousse is seriously the best self-tanner on the market. I love how evenly and easily it goes on, and that it doesn’t have that nasty smell to it. The Ordinary Glycolic Acid—I saturate a cotton pad and use it under my arms for reducing dark patches. It’s magic. I wish I had discovered it sooner!

The best beauty tips she learned in the mansion: Less is truly more when it comes to foundation. Use a cream blush that melts into the skin. Hydrate like crazy. Use hydrating primer. Eye patches before makeup. Avoid heavy hair spray. Use blotting papers instead of constantly applying more powder.

Her drugstore-heavy makeup rotation: I wear L’Oréal True Match Tinted Serum Foundation every single day and love it. Fit Me Pressed Powder by Maybelline. Milani blush and bronzer are better than any high-end product out there. MAC pencil eyeliner in Teddy is pretty much the only eyeliner I use. Maybelline Lash Sensational is simply the best! E.L.F. setting spray—I loved how most of the women on the show used it. Stila Shimmer and Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in the color Grace. Superb!

Her beauty advice for her 30-something self: Never go without sunscreen….ever! Start using products for your neck and décolletage. Get regular facials and be sure to exfoliate once a week. Don’t sleep with your makeup on. Keep hydrated and make sure you get proper sleep. Invest in quality serums like vitamin C and hyaluronic acid as well as retinol. DO NOT OVERPLUCK! A good primer makes all the difference. Don’t spend a fortune on your manicures.

    Maia, 58

The skin care products she can’t live without: SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic Serum, Chanel Sublimage La Creme Yeux, Zo Skin Health Hydrating Cream, Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask, Peter Thomas Roth 24k Gold Hydragel Eye Patches, Follow the Sun Golden Face & Body Oil (from my local Malibu farmers’ market).

Her biggest beauty splurge: Professional blow-outs—worth every penny! My hair is naturally frizzy, and when it's sleek and shiny, I feel my most confident.

Her favorite way to moisturize: I coat my body in organic coconut oil, wrap myself in towels, and watch TV or read—it is the most nourishing and affordable moisturizing ritual!

The best beauty tip she learned on set: During filming of The Golden Bachelor, the makeup artist introduced me to Le Mieux Derma Relief Serum. It gives the perfect dewy base under makeup. I've been hooked ever since!

Her aging philosophy: In my 30s, I thought beauty was about perfection. Now, I see fine lines as proof of laughter, wisdom. Beauty evolves, and leaning into that makes you truly radiant!

    Susie, 62

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Susan.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

Her must-have beauty products: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, Isdin sunscreen, SkinMedica TNS Ceramide Treatment Cream and TNS Recovery Complex, Ourself HA+ Replenishing Eye Serum, L'Oréal Professionnel Metal Detox shampoo and mask, Tom Ford foundation, Charlotte Tilbury eyeliner pencil, brow pencil, and blush, and L’Oréal bronzer powder.

The beauty lesson she wishes she’d learned in her 30s: Retin-A! I still don't use it, but I should. My friend is 64 and her skin is flawless, and she swears it's because she’s used Retin-A since she was 30.

    Lisa, 66

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Lisa.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

Her minimal beauty routine: I’m pretty low-maintenance on the beauty products, but I absolutely can’t leave the house without my pink lip gloss! I’m also known for always having my lashes on. I could be mowing the yard, and I will have eyelashes on. Ridiculous, I know, but that’s just me!

Her one-product nightly skin care ritual: The one skin care item I use every night is Egyptian Magic Cream. I found it on clearance at TJMaxx about five years ago, and now I’m hooked! A jar lasts forever, and there are only five ingredients.

Her beauty advice for her 30-something self: Get outside as much as possible and get some kind of exercise every day. Oh, and drink lots of water! I didn’t start doing any of that until my mid-thirties.

    Roxeanne, 63

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Roxeanne.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

Her favorite beauty indulgence: My biggest beauty splurge is always going to be my primer and foundation. I want my skin to look flawless and have a natural glow. I don't like heavy makeup that looks caked on the face—it will only accentuate the wrinkles and imperfections. I swear by Tarte's BB Blur Tinted Moisturizer.

The beauty treatments she swears by: I use a gua sha tool every morning, followed by face ice plunging. I use scar tape on my forehead along with mouth tape before I go to bed. I do red light therapy not only on my face, but other parts of my body. Every six weeks, I do microneedling to help with pore minimizing and boosting collagen production.

    Cindy, 60

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Cindy.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

The products that helped her survive the mansion: During the filming, I used One/Size On 'Til Dawn Setting Spray and Lawless Perfecting Power. It is a perfect way to set your makeup. Westmore Beauty Body Coverage Perfector blurs my freckles and illuminates my skin—I found this gem right before we checked into the mansion; it was a game-changer. Do yourself a favor and get the buffing brush with it. The brush is half the magic.

Her hair loss and regrowth journey: When I contracted COVID several years ago, I lost about one-third of my hair density. My hair was shedding in clumps. Of course, it was just on my head; those pesky stray hairs on my face and body had no problem growing. To support the best and quickest hair growth—under a physician-guided program—I did a combination of treatments: oral medications, topical treatments, and injectable interventions. My non-negotiables are the chewable Biotin + Minoxidil from Hers and a finasteride prescription. Additionally, I have used Nutrafol hair serum and injectable exosomes. The combination treatment is key, and it has been working.

The treatments she swears by: BBL laser twice a year works for me to tap back sun damage and perfect my skin. It is a splurge, but I end up saving because I buy fewer products to perfect my skin. And facials with Betty Boyd at Barbarino Surgical Arts in Austin! Betty is the quintessential aesthetician who will customize her treatment based on your concerns and how much downtime you can tolerate. It is important to go to an expert if you want red carpet results.

The beauty lessons she wishes she’d learned earlier: With every decade, you will see signs of aging. I'm a big proponent of keeping up, but don't get ahead of yourself. In your 40s, take in enough protein for your body to grow great hair and produce nice skin. Hydrate your body. It's likely time to start neurotoxins and up your skin care routine. Look to the experts, like Allure and your local dermatology practice. And be kind to yourself! We are all beautiful. Highlight what makes you unique, and don't try to copy someone else's features.

Her beauty routine breakdown: For my skin, keeping it simple has always been key for me, so I’m using Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar always and Olay Age Defying Anti-Wrinkle Lotion for my face—a routine passed down from two generations above me! For my hair, I use Biolage Ultra Hydrasource Shampoo and Color Last Conditioner. My makeup must-haves are Bobbi Brown blush in Pink Flame and lipstick in Crushed.

    Amy, 63

Her favorite beauty products: Believe it or not, I’ve been using baby lotion all over my face and body since my girls were born! I love using Kiehl’s, it’s just so clean and fresh. I also use their grapefruit body wash and amino acid shampoo and conditioner. I use a Dyson Air Wrap; it gives me a salon blowout, and it’s so easy to do at home.

Her biggest beauty splurges: I love getting massages. I think it is so good for your body and circulation. I also get my lashes done every couple of weeks, and I always have perfectly manicured hands and feet.

    Monica P, 60

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Monica P.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

Her reparative hair care routine: I use Kevin Murphy products, the Repair-Me Wash shampoo and Repair-Me Rinse conditioner. I also use the heavier Re.Store conditioner two times per month. These products are important because I color my hair, and it can get dried out easily. I use Oribe Gold Lust Hair Oil, Dry Shampoo, and Heat Protection Spray.

The beauty treatments she swears by: My beauty treatments that I swear by are microneedling, eyelash extensions, and laser procedures to keep my skin glowing and get rid of brown spots.

The beauty lessons she wished she’d learned earlier: I wish I had learned in my 30s and 40s to moisturize my face and skin more than I did then and to use retinol at night! Plus maybe to stay out of the sun more than I did.

    Gerri, 64

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Gerri.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

Her non-negotiable beauty must-haves: Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil, Bobbi Brown foundation, NARS blush, and pretty much anything from MAC—they never let me down. I use Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Minimizing Clay Face Mask three times a week.

The best beauty tip she learned on set: That I look incredible in bold colors! Orange, yellow, and pink have become my new go-tos.

The beauty lesson she wishes she’d learned in her 30s: That face masks aren’t just a treat—they’re a necessity.

    Mylene, 61

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Mylene.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

Her beauty routine breakdown: I never skip a rich moisturizer with SPF—Murad is my go-to. I also use a gentle exfoliant, a vitamin C serum, and 111 Skin patches for the undereyes. For hair, I rely on a lightweight leave-in treatment, BioSilk Silk Therapy. I absolutely cannot live without my Big Sexy Hair Powder Play; I never leave the house without it! Makeup musts are concealer by Hourglass, Anastasia eyebrow pencil, Rare Beauty blush, and a good gloss.

Her biggest beauty splurge: Facials! I invest in monthly facials. I also purchased the Currentbody Skin LED Light Therapy Face Mask. I use it four to five times a week, and I feel like I’m aging backwards.

The other beauty treatments she swears by: Dermaplaning, Botox, and fillers. Some might shy away from them, but I believe in doing what makes you feel beautiful—and these treatments definitely do that for me.

Her beauty MVPs in the mansion: Lip gloss, blotting papers, hairspray—and most importantly, my daughter. She taught me how to do my makeup before the show, and I’ve learned everything from her.

The beauty lesson she wishes she’d learned in her 30s: To really invest in my skin—especially SPF; protect your face like it’s priceless because it is—to honor the power of rest, and to embrace that beauty is personal. Most of all, to never let anyone make you feel less than who you are—there’s nothing more beautiful than confidence, self-love, and a heart that shines.

    Robin, 63

ABC's The Golden Bachelor stars Robin.Photo: Courtesy of ABC

Her “easy and effective” makeup routine: I use It Cosmetics CC+ cream with sunscreen every day along with Ilia cream blush, and the most important product is the Victoria Beckham highlighter.

Her biggest beauty splurge: Getting facials with microdermabrasion.

The beauty lesson she wishes she’d learned in her 30s: Keep all of your body out of the sun, not just your face.

Her go-to skin care brand: I have been using the Meaningful Beauty complete face routine for a couple of years. The cleanser, eye cream, and day/night cream are amazing, but I never run out of the Youth Activating Melon serum; it’s a non-negotiable.

Her biggest beauty splurge: Dyson styling tools.

The beauty lesson she wishes she’d learned in her 30s and 40s: That sunscreen is essential, and to take regular vitamin D supplements. I love Kopari Sunglaze Sheer Setting Mist Sunscreen.

While everyone I know is listening to Sabrina Carpenter's new album, Man's Best Friend, I'm over here having a staring contest with her new Vogue Italia cover. And can you blame me? The inherently stunning pop star is looking out unblinkingly from the warm, retro Steven Meisel portrait, wearing Pat McGrath-applied eye makeup that's just begging me to fail to recreate it. But perhaps the most mesmerizing element of the look is her updated 'do.

Even when she switches things up and away from her signature look, Carpenter tends to exude blonde bombshell energy, and her Vogue Italia shoot is no exception. But instead of her usual length—typically anywhere from mid-shoulder-blade to way down to her waist—the singer-songwriter is seen in a downright inspirational lob styled by Guido Palau.

Shoulder-length hair can often feel like a temporary layover while growing out a short style into a longer one or making a safe chop on the way to a shorter look, but this full, flippy, voluminous take on the long bob is far from “neither here nor there.” Palau has given Carpenter a blowout that combines ‘90s and ’60s vibes to create a modern take on polished oomph that proves glamour doesn't depend on lengthening extensions.

“Femininity is not a mask but an experiment, a shifting character I can write and rewrite every day,” Carpenter says in the accompanying interview. “I always love an opportunity where I get to really play a character and channel something. This time [during the shoot with Steven Meisel, ed.] it was something that felt a little bit more sophisticated, but still just very playful.”

The Allure Staff Is Completely Divided on Tabi Nails

A pair of Tabi shoes is seen next to a manicure inspired by the splittoe design.Photos: Getty Images; Courtesy of Maison GelSave StorySave this storySave StorySave this story

In all of history, no shoe has sparked as much passionate debate as the Tabi. The split-toe shoe (and sock!) concept originated in 15th-century Japan but eventually became a darling of the fashion world when Maison Margiela’s Tabi boots first appeared on the runway in 1988. Since then, Tabi designs have taken over the mainstream shoe market, street style shoots, TikTok, and red carpets, becoming one of the world’s most instantly recognizable shoe styles.

Now you can also wear Tabis on your nails. Fashion folks have become so Tabi-pilled in recent years that nail artists have started looking to the shoe for inspiration and are mimicking their cloven shape with nail extensions, creating a burgeoning trend that’s just as polarizing as the shoes themselves.

Tabi nails are exactly what they sound like: a manicure shaped like the Tabi shoe. They’re usually long enough to stretch well past the fingertips and have narrow vertical splits cut or filed in the middle. There’s no “one size fits all” approach to the Tabi nail; some nail artists have fun exaggerating the shape, embellishing the nails with bows or 3D charms or even sticking a little charm inside the split. Some get really into the animal hoof vibe with black tips and rough textures, while others use classic nail art designs like French tips as their base. Some like to use a single Tabi nail as an accent in a mix-and-match manicure, and others go full Tabi on all ten digits.

And true to form, people have opinions about the Tabi nails, just as they do about the shoe design. In fact, when the Allure staff first came upon the trend, some editors weren’t thrilled at the idea of covering it—at least not without addressing some very strong feelings they have about the design’s… divisive aesthetics. “‘Round, square, or cloven?’” just isn't a question I think a manicurist should ever be asking,” executive beauty director Jenny Bailly joked in Allure’s staff group chat, where editors weigh in on trends and daily news. Creative director Amber Venerable wrote that she loves her silver disco Tabi shoes but would “NEVER” get Tabi nails. “I hate them…That split nail is just not cute!” Social media manager Bianca Richards wrote, “Leave the Tabis to the toes, and that's final!”

It wasn’t entirely hater-central, though. Content director Kara McGrath wrote, “I wouldn't say I hate them, I just think the people who get them are very brave! I could feel my hair getting snagged in the middle just looking at the photos.” Senior news editor Nicola Dall’Asen wrote, “Look, I don’t like the way they look… but at least they’re doing something interesting!” And social director Kassidy Silva bashfully admitted to liking Tabi nails with the peeking-through-hands emoji. “If the people want to wear shoes on their hands, let them,” she wrote. “They’ve grown on me, I like a freaky little shoe nail.”

Personally, I’m what you’d call a reformed Tabi hater. Though I used to be somewhat repulsed by the idea of having my toes separated in such a shall-we-say unique manner, I have since seen the light and embraced the split-toe design—so much so that I’ve started stalking The RealReal for a reasonably priced pair. I feel the exact same way about Tabi nails. When they started popping up on my feeds during Fashion Month, my first thought was, “No way!” Followed by, “But wait, do I actually love this?” Jarring, yet intriguing!

Would I actually wear them? Probably not. Personally, I play with my hair too much for this to be a practical manicure; the idea of strands getting caught between the “clefts” sends a chill down my spine. But do I appreciate them? Absolutely. I love when nail art gets weird, edgy, or even a little unsettling. It’s called nail art for a reason, and because it isn’t permanent like a tattoo, it’s an ideal canvas for out-there ideas and out-of-the-box designs.

“It’s so different from what you expect from nails,” says Molly a.k.a. Maison Gel, a Melbourne-based nail artist who recently crafted a set of Tabi French tips for a client who came to her with the idea. She used a needle-nose diamond E-file bit to create the Tabi-esque split on a set of Après Gel X tips. And in case you had any doubts about the durability of the design, Molly notes that the client did not have any issues and came back four weeks later with the set still perfectly intact.

Molly recognizes that the Tabi shape is divisive, especially as a manicure. “There are a lot of mixed reactions to the design, which is fair enough!” she says. “I think most of the fun in nail art comes from silliness, and with nails [that were inspired by] shoes that are already polarizing, it was a lot of fun for us both,” Molly adds. “Nails have far surpassed the need to be polite and pretty. Women are already expected to adhere to so many beauty standards, let them have crazy nail shapes for a month!”

That’s the thing about art, whether it’s a couture gown, a painting, or even a manicure style; if it doesn’t create conversation, then what’s the point? There is beauty in things society deems “ugly”—just ask Margiela and fellow designers like Alexander McQueen, who have spent decades confronting the idea of ugliness and incorporating it into their work. Plus, in a sea of sheer “soap nail” manicures and classic French tips, Tabi nails are shocking, surprising, even a little subversive. They’re not asking to be adored by everyone—they’re just here to raise some eyebrows and have a little fun.

Martha Stewart has been sharing advice for as long as she's been famous. Younger readers may not realize this, but it's what she's famous for. Hosting, cooking, decorating—her lifestyle tips didn't just put her on the map, they became the map. And while she has definitely branched out into other areas over the last couple of decades, Stewart is still a well of brilliant advice, including within the beauty space.

Stewart joined American Vogue's new head of editorial content, Chloe Malle, for a candid conversation on The Run-Through podcast, recorded before a live audience. Malle had lots of questions for Stewart—who wouldn't?—and Stewart was more than happy to go into great detail about everything from playing mahjong with Cardi B to Instagram comment drama with her gardener. She even declared herself the blueprint for the controversial trad wife lifestyle.

“I’m a trad wife. I’m the original. I love trad wives,” Stewart tells Malle, adding that she's planning to visit Ballerina Farm as well as Nara Aziza.

The multi-hyphenate didn't share any beauty tips that were particularly trad-wife-specific, but she did offer her guidance on living an age-defying life.

“I don’t think about age. I think one secret of growing old gracefully is not to think about how old you are. If I started to think about how old I was—come on, it would be horrifying," Stewart, who recently celebrated her 84th birthday, tells Malle. “So I don’t think about that. But one thing I do do—and it’s good for anybody older—if you’re over 60, start making younger friends.”

Stewart, like so many of us, is interested in looking as youthful as she feels, hence the recent launch of her skin-care line, Elm Biosciences. But beyond using the brand's serum and supplement, she has advice for looking photogenic.

Recalling what is now one of the most iconic thirst traps in recent years, Malle asked Stewart how the rest of us can recreate that magic.

“First of all, feel like you look good. And look good. It helps to have a little bit of makeup on; you don’t have to have a lot of makeup. And the lighting is all-important,” Stewart says, elaborating on what went into her museum-worthy 2020 Instagram post. “When I was coming out of the pool and I just happened to look at my camera. I wasn’t aiming to take a thirst trap, I was aiming to take a selfie.”

Ultimately: “Try to feel attractive. That’s important.”

Follow Stewart's lead by doing pilates three times a week and drinking green juice straight from the garden every day—the bushier the celery, the better—and you're well on your way.
